1. Black History Month Assembly
This year our Black History Month Assembly on Thursday was titled, Songs of Freedom. The goal of presenter, Jonathan Emile, was to engage our students by showcasing cultural influences of black music with an emphasis on social cooperation between and across cultures over time. He spoke about music as a tool for communication and social justice. He emphasized that Black History is inseparable from the history of the whole of society.
Jonathan is a Grammy Award nominee, urban poet, composer and performer. His energetic and thoughtful presentation was very well received by the students in both assemblies. Many students stayed at the end of the assemblies to speak to Jonathan about his presentation and to have a photo taken with him.
2. Course Selection Verification Sheets, February 19
Course selection verification sheets, signed by a parent/guardian, are due to be handed in to the Guidance Office by Tuesday, February 19. The courses selected now form the foundation for our school timetable next year and so solid thought needs to go into selecting courses.
3. Lunar New Year Banquet, Thursday, February 21
A few tickets are still available for Thursday’s Lunar New Year banquet. The cost is $25/person. Parents/guardians are welcome to join us for this annual FHCI event. You may purchase a ticket through your child.
4. Student Attendance
Whenever a student is absent from class, we notify home via an automated phone call. We can direct that auto-dialed call to whatever number is best for you to receive it. That can be a home number, cell phone or work number. Please let me know if you wish the phone number updated.
In response, we require contact from a parent/guardian with the reason for absence. We then note that reason in your child’s attendance record. You can notify the school by email at email@example.com; by phone at 416-393-1860 x 0; or via a note sent with your child. Those notes come to the main office—we keep the original and give your child a copy to take to teachers.
I will be in touch with parents/guardians via email about absences thus far in February for which we have no absence reason so that we can bring our records up to date.
5. Family Day, Monday, February 18
There are no classes on Monday, February 18, “Family Day.” I hope your family has a great day together.
6. Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test, April 11…Advance Notice
Students who were in Grade 9 for the first time last year (2011-2012) are slated to write the Grade 10 Literacy test on April 11, 2013. Also writing the test that day will be students who were absent from last year’s test, were deferred from writing last year, or who were unsuccessful in last year’s test.
The test evaluates a student’s skills and knowledge from Grade 9 English. If a student is scheduled to write the test this year but has not completed ENG1P/1D or ESLD, then the student will be deferred from writing the test in April. I will be in touch directly with all students who are to write the test and those who are deferred. Students writing the test will all be engaged in practice sessions with extra sessions planned for students who will benefit from additional preparation for the test.
Students who are not writing the test on April 11 will not come to school that day.
